About

Photo albums, for me, were never meant to be just for storage. They were always my “Book of Memories”. Family albums were often left open on tables for all to enjoy. My passion for photographs has taken me past the album pages and onto the walls. A favorite photo can be turned into a work of art and enjoyed everyday.

From the first simple kaleidoscopes I had used as a child, to the first photo kaleidoscope I ever saw – I was hooked. Mesmerized. A TV clip on photo kaleidoscopes led my creative side to explore its potential. I researched the idea and developed my own style, and Photoscopes was created!

My medium is a single photograph. I select an image or detail from the photograph. After making multiple copies of the photo, I hand-cut the angles on each copy containing the image. The angles are then laid in a pattern to create the kaleidoscope. The cuts made by hand add a third dimension to the piece that cannot be created on computer. The image is never distorted, only jumbled and enhanced. I embellish the Photoscope with creative matting and framing to complete the look. A beautiful framed piece of art that could become a family heirloom.

I was fascinated by the patterns created, and the way the colours played within those patterns. Simple lines crossing paths can create beauty. I love that the patterns can pull you in and challenge what you are seeing.

I would like to use the beauty of the patterns to draw the viewer to my work. The single image might not be always obvious. They may be surprised. When the viewer realizes that a single image is what created the pattern, I get a smile. That smile is my pleasure!

Organizer

Angie Giglio, Photoscopes

I am a visual artist working with photographs. I retired from being a weekly docent at the McMichael Gallery.

Being retired, I was able to explore my creative side. Photoscopes was a starting point but I continued to work with photographs to make birth announcements and photo storyboards. Zentangle was another passion. I learned about this type of art during my last years of working as a docent at the art gallery.

I now run a Creative Club from my home. I worked with children for many years and now I am working with seniors. The creative process is no different. I believe that creativity is in everyone. We just need to practice it and your life will be richer for it. Those who have learned to make it part of their life have less stress and more joy. I truly believe that!
