About
Agora Gallery is pleased to present Outside/In, a public art project featuring sculpture by Tom Campbell in shop windows around Stratford's historic Market Square. As people are being encouraged to social distance and remain outside as much as possible due to Covid-19, Campbell's life-like and intriguing sculptures of figures doing outdoor activities - sitting around a campfire, looking up at the sky, enjoying water at the beach, sightseeing - appear in windows along Market Place. Outside/In has been realized in collaboration with The Little Prince Cinema, Cora Couture, Mone-Thai Restaurant, The Cat Cafe & Ramshackle Industries.
Tom Campbell was born in England and grew up in Stratford. He studied stage design, painting and sculpture in London, England (at Camden Arts Centre & Camberwell School of Art and Design) before returning to Canada in 1982. In 1985, he had his first solo exhibition at Gallery Stratford, won the Kitchener-Waterloo Gallery prize for painting and joined Bau-Xi Gallery (Toronto and Vancouver). He joined Agora Gallery in Stratford in 2015 with a solo exhibition celebrating 30 years since his first exhibition in Stratford. More recently, his work has been shown at the Galleria St Laurent + HilI, Ottawa and in C Word (Craft in the Fine Arts) curated by Richard Mongiat at The Doris McCarthy Gallery, Toronto. On television, he was featured in “Artists in the Urban Environment” for Spectrum and Star Portraits, which aired on Bravo. He has been teaching at Toronto School of Art since 1989 and at the Ikaria Cultural Centre in Greece since 2000.
