About
Join us for a hilarious look at the lighter side of taking meds, dealing with addictions, seeing counselors, getting diagnosed, and surviving the mental health system. SMH Comedy Society
Founded in 2004 by award-winning counsellor and stand-up comic David Granirer who himself suffers from depression, Stand Up For Mental Health (SMH) is an award-winning program that teaches stand-up comedy to people with mental health issues as a way of building confidence and fighting public stigma.
We make a huge difference in the lives of our comics and also to the community by showing them a totally different perspective on mental health. Audiences at our shows see people on stage who are funny, likeable, friendly, and courageous, qualities you often don’t associate with someone who has mental health issues!
Our shows are hilarious, and they’re a great way to educate the public about what it means to have a mental health condition. And what better way to learn about such a serious subject then through comedy!
We are funded by various sponsors without whom we could’t keep the program going. And you’re most welcome to make a donation to our cause!
We began giving classes in the Vancouver area in 2004 and incorporated as a non-profit society in July 2010. We have a 6 month long level one program plus an alumni program for comics who have finished their level one and want to continue performing.
We do approximately 20 shows a year in the Vancouver area for all sorts of different organizations. We’ve performed for government, corporations, non-profit organizations, correctional facilities, on military bases, and we’ve also been part of medical school curriculums.
