About

The Poppy Stitch Along is a social arts and craft event where the public can learn to knit and/or crochet yarn poppies. The community is actively making poppies now and there are hundreds. These poppies will then be placed on a netting background to be draped on various buildings, monuments or structures in Paris.

This Poppy Project will commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Paris Royal Canadian Legion Branch 29 (1926 -2026) — 2026 is also the 100th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Legion of Canada.

To support the 100th Anniversary celebrations, donations can be made to Paris Legion Branch 29 at 70 William Street, Paris, ON N3L 1L6, via cheque, in-person, or e-transfer to [email protected]. Donors are asked to mark contributions with “ANNIVERSARY” to distinguish them from general Legion donations.

See you on September 20th!

This event is open to everyone who wishes to knit or crochet the poppies. This activity is reminiscent of bees(quilting) where community groups gathered to work on a project beneficial to all. During the 2 world wars socks, hats, mitts and vests were made to be sent overseas. There is also the need for participants to attach the poppies to the netting which can be done by anyone as it does not require knitting or crocheting skills.

The legion is a community organization that supports not only veterans but youth and seniors’ groups throughout the area. As a member of a local quilt guild, Cheryl Humphrey was coordinator of a successful quilt show in Paris in 2024 at the #ForParisCentre. The work involved 2 years of planning and coordinating volunteers and businesses.
