About
Meet the Artist: Hema Ravi
Hema Ravi, a proud Indo-Canadian, has called Canada home for nearly 30 years. After retiring from a career as a Policy Advisor with the Government of Ontario, Hema discovered her passion for photography and mandala art. What began as a simple exploration during the Covid period has blossomed into a deep love for mandala drawing, which she finds meditative and joyful. Each piece she creates brings her peace and a sense of creativity.

Materials Used:
8 inch round wooden or canvas base
Large ruler to draw the gridlines
Compass to draw circles (helps place mandala designs uniformly)
White chalk or charcoal pencil
16 line stencil for gridlines (available on Amazon)
Set of dotting tools (available on Amazon)
DecoArt Americana acrylic paints in various colours (available at Michaels or other craft stores)
(Colours used: Snow (Titanium) White, Bright Yellow, Sea Breeze, Provence Sky, Peaches ‘n Cream, Scarlet)
Rag cloth or paper towel (to wipe dotting tools)
Liquitex Gloss Varnish (to seal and add a glossy finish)
Process Overview:
Paint the wooden or canvas base with two coats of black acrylic paint.
Find the centre point of the base using folded paper and mark it.
Align the 16 line stencil with the centre point to draw gridlines; extend them to the edge with a ruler.
Use a compass to draw concentric circles up to the edge of the base.
Create the dot mandala design with acrylic paints and dotting tools, making dots of various sizes and flower petal “swooshes.”
Let the paint dry for 24 hours.
Erase the guidelines carefully.
Apply varnish to protect and seal the artwork.
This step-by-step video shows the full process of creating a colourful dot mandala painting on an 8-inch wooden base.
