Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre
The Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre (CBHC) is the largest and most popular cultural and heritage attraction in the Algoma District, located in Sault Ste. Marie, ON. The CBHC was formed in 1987 by a small group of volunteers wishing to preserve Ontario’s rich bushplane and firefighting heritage. Located in the historic 65,000 sq. ft. Ontario Provincial Air Service (OPAS) hangar built in 1947, the CBHC preserves and tells the story of bush flying in Canada with 24 interactive aircraft displays and related exhibits, mostly related to forest fire education. The aviation section features Canada’s largest bushplane. Our collection, unlike most museums, allows visitors to touch, enter, sit in a cockpit, and climb a small fire tower. In one of our theatres, we run an award-winning film, Wildfires, reflecting the use of Ontario’s 415 waterbomber on a large forest fire.
The CBHC is a community and tourism hub. We offer programming for kids and seniors, educational and interpretive tours and lessons, and multiple community events throughout the year. Our event centre facilitates weddings, corporate events and events to help other community partners generate funds.
