About

The Chinese Taoism Kuan-Kung Association, which runs the Tianjing temple, partnered with the Rotary Club of Vancouver Centennial to host the 2019 competition.

In other calligraphy competitions the competitors can send in submissions prepared in advance. However, this competition will all be live. Furthermore, the draw ensures no one can practice the poem in advance, making the event fair, and official.

This competition is organized to encourage people of all ages to carry forward the culture embodied in calligraphy which occupies a distinguished position in traditional Chinese culture.

Calligraphy (also known as 書法 in Chinese) is a visual art related to writing. It is the design and execution of lettering with a broad tip instrument, brush, or other writing instruments. A contemporary calligraphic practice can be defined as "the art of giving form to signs in an expressive, harmonious, and skillful manner".

Modern calligraphy ranges from functional inscriptions and designs to fine-art pieces where the letters may or may not be readable. Classical calligraphy differs from typography and non-classical hand-lettering, though a calligrapher may practice both.
