ABOUT
Jon Shaw is coordinating an interactive mixed-media painting created with audience participation.
ARTISTS
Jon Shaw is a full-time painter who was born and raised in St. Catharines. He spent eight years documenting the crumbly, decaying urban landscape of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside before returning to Niagara in 2018. Jon’s work gathered heavy acclaim on the West Coast where he exhibited in and around Metro Vancouver while several major corporate collections acquired his work.
Since returning to St. Catharines, Jon has created bodies of work documenting the demolition of the former General Hospital and northern Ontario landscapes. In addition to previous participation in last year’s In The Soil Festival, Jon has taught classes through Brock University’s Alumni Art Association, exhibited at the NAC, Mahtay Cafe and The Niagara Herbalist, and led community art projects with Culture Days.
His project for this year’s In The Soil Festival is an interactive painting created with various drawing and painting techniques. He will follow his usual process, where he establishes a large ink drawing on wood in advance of paint layers. Instead of then filling in sections of colour himself, he will invite festivalgoers to contribute their own marks. He will assist with all aspects of this process including colour mixing and paint application. This project will therefore allow participants to leave their individual mark on the completed piece, which will change and grow over the festival’s four days.
Jon received his BFA from Mount Allison University in 2008. Notable gallery exhibitions include Kimoto Gallery, East Van Culture Centre, Niagara Artists Centre and forthcoming projects at Grimsby Public Art Gallery (2021). Press coverage includes The Georgia Straight, Tourism Vancouver’s Official 2019 Visitor’s Guide, The Sound, The St. Catharines Standard and Niagara This Week.

Organizer
In the Soil Arts Festival
Suitcase in Point, our partnering organizations, and a fantastic assortment of regional and national artists are gearing up to deliver part one of the reimagined In the Soil Multi (p)Arts Festival, ITS Online!
Our original, three-day celebration was set to take place in downtown St. Catharines June 5-7 with a program to include an incredible roster of artists delivering innovative work in live theatre, music, comedy, film, interactive workshops, site-specific installations and an opening night multi-arts spectacle! While we are saddened to have to cancel our annual gathering, we have reimagined an exciting new program and look forward to delivering In the Soil: A Multi (p)Arts Festival, starting with Part One: ITS Online.
Join us from the comfort of your screens on Friday 22 May at 6pm as we launch a digital series of one-time arts experiences. Events will run from Friday 22 May through Sunday 7 June, and will feature a little something for everyone, including: music, comedy, dance, aerial, theatre and comedy performances, dance parties, panel discussions, family friendly art making workshops, a collage party and more!
The full ITS Online schedule will be released very soon! In the meantime, mark your calendars for our exciting launch event with special guests, live performances and a good hour of good times, set for Friday 22 May at 6pm.
To make the ITS Online launch extra special, we encourage you to order some food and drink from your favourite local establishments as we join together (while apart) to celebrate our communities, our artists and our shared goal to get through this COVID-19 insanity.
ITS Online will be a free series with opportunities to donate. All donations will go toward supporting artist fees throughout our reimagined Multi (p)Arts Festival. Details of the next parts of the festival will unfold over the coming months and will include a “we’re back” street party, live theatre, comedy and music events, and our flagship multi-arts event, Rhizomes.
