About

Come see a grove of floating bicycles at The Forks!

Getting around on foot, by bike, and other human-powered means is becoming more and more of a public preoccupation. The pleasure of doing this kind of activity together is something we've all become more aware of in the past two years. For so long we've been denied opportunities to take part in such activities.

On top of this, we are all more and more aware of the importance of respecting the environment – whether we think of global concerns like climate change or local ones, like the future of Winniupeg's beloved urban tree canopy. The project aims to create a public space experience to be enjoyed by all Winnipeggers, focused on bicycles and trees.

The project creates an “Upside Down” world of suspended bicycles high in the tree canopy. Bicycles are hung from cables running from tree to tree, and will be vividly lit up at night. The cables form a web between trees, perhaps reminding us of the social and natural ties that bind us together - an interconnected web of relationships. The site is accessible by bicycle, foot, boat, and mobility assitance devices, and will shine brightly over the Forks harbour. Together the installation elements create an engaging environment that speaks of movement, connection, energy and enjoyment.

Sputnik Architecture & Friends

Sputnik is a multidisciplinary team focused on the art and architecture of public space. On this project we're working with Downtown Winnipeg BIZ, The Forks, The Plain Bicycle Project, Boreal Tree Solutions, Lights Unlimited and Anvil Tree. This joyful and exciting environment, celebrating the role of art in public space and its connection with sustainable and healthy activity, is one of many we've worked on with partners from the arts, architecture, and the communities of Winnipeg, Manitoba, and around the world.
