About

Please note: in accordance with new public health orders, Nuit Blanche Winnipeg events are currently being adjusted and rescheduled as stand-alone events happening at different times over the course of Culture Days, which runs now until October 25th. This project will unfortunately not be presented this year, and instead will be part of Nuit Blanche Winnipeg next year in 2021.

Concept

In movies the female body is often seen in pieces. Close ups of sultry eyes, long

legs or full lips are edited together into a sequence to suggest a whole woman.

But what if we took the pieces apart and found that they belonged to more than

one person?

Short Film

On the set for a new beauty product commercial, Vanity White tries to ignore the young and pretty Hand Model. But when close ups of the two women are edited to portray a single body it creates a new disjointed being, a woman made from pieces. Inexplicable things begin to happen as image and real life become confused.

Screenings ever half hour: 7:30, 8:00, 8:30, 9:00, 9:30, 10:00, 10:30, 11:00, 11:30, 12:00

Interactive Installation

The film set from the beauty commercials in Scopophobia will be recreated on

site, complete with an eight foot tall gold wall, neon lights and 80s era production equipment. Volunteers will be invited to pose for a close up. Two on site cameras will capture the lower and upper bodies respectively of two different volunteers. When live feeds are played back on a stack of broadcast monitors, it will collage different bodies together and create a composite being.

Active between 7 pm and Midnight, except during the screenings

The project will utilize outdoor space, with capacity limits and physical distancing measures in place. (Hand sanitizer will be available on site.)

Organizer

Illuminate the Night - Lasha Mowchun

Each year, an Open Call is held for artists to propose pieces that will enhance the audience experience of Nuit Blanche Winnipeg through the Illuminate the Night program. Projects are selected by a jury of artists and art professionals and are featured in Winnipeg’s downtown core.

This is a call inviting artists working in all artistic mediums to submit projects- performance artists, installation artists, textile artists, graphic designers, media artists, architects and general creative thinkers – with a performance, exhibition or installation that will enthrall, excite and possibly introduce Winnipeggers to something they have never seen or experienced before.

Since graduating with a BFA in 2012 Lasha has established herself as a filmmaker and film educator in Winnipeg. Lasha’s films play with social norms, bending and stretching the code of acceptable human behaviour to achieve surreal images. Her films have screened internationally at venues including the Julie Saul Gallery in NYC and the Athens International Film and Video Festival. Lasha balances grants, screenwriting, directing and producing; paving a road for her singular artistic vision.
