About

Carl Stewart is a weaver living and working in Ottawa, Ontario. For more than 30 years his socially and politically engaged, and enraged, textiles have celebrated, memorialized, documented and commemorated the intimate, the fabulous, the egregious and the tragic.

He will present new artwork in exhibition called Wholecloth at the Arbor Gallery during the entire month of September. Whole cloth is a fabric straight from loom, intact, a blank canvas of possibilities. But what if that fabric is made from recycled or repurposed textiles? Does it limit the possibilities? Does it retain any vestiges of its previous life? Does it resonate in the hand, to the touch? Does it remember? These are the motivations behind this exhibition.

Stewart will also give a talk on Sunday, October 1, 3pm. Admission is free.

Arbor Gallery - Galerie Arbor

A not-for-profit registered charity, Arbor Gallery - Galerie Arbor aims to raise and expand the appreciation of all art forms, from visual arts, fine crafts and crafts, music and performing arts, to the community at large. Its core vocation is that of an art gallery, presenting artwork from local and regional artists and artisans throughout the year. Aligning with its community arts and culture component, it also offers awareness-building events (Black History Month, Indigenous History and Pride, 2SLBGTQ+) and has increased local and out-of-town collaborations.
