Multi-sensory Storytelling: Create Your Shoebox Stage (2-2.5 hours)

Share a personal story (around 3 minutes) that resonates with you, whether it's your own experiences, family anecdotes, or cultural folk tales. We provide diverse materials such as textured fabrics, natural objects, and scented elements to enhance the sensory aspects of storytelling, with an emphasis on accessibility and inclusivity. During the workshop, you will have the opportunity to create a multi-sensory kit that expresses your story in a new and imaginative way, and bring the kit home. Before attending the workshop, we encourage you to think about your story and bring personal objects, pictures and materials that relate to it. We also encourage you to bring your own box as the stage of the story. We will use shoebox or shadow box with bottom dimension up to 11" x 14".

Live transcription services are available, and ASL translation is available upon request. We encourage you to bring your own fidgeting or sensory tools that make you feel comfortable. Please make sure to inform us of any specific access needs you have on the registration form. Your comfort and inclusivity are important to us.

There will be short breaks and refreshments.

This event was made possible with local support from Quadra Village Community Centre and Pandora Arts Collectives Society.

Ann K. Chou - BC Culture Days Ambassador

Ann K Chou, a visual technologist-artist from Hong Kong, is known for her spontaneous brushwork in Chinese calligraphy ink and vibrant acrylics. She specializes in crafting lanterns and wearable puppets using a diverse range of naturally found and upcycled materials, including heritage bamboo. As a first-generation immigrant, a severe hard-of-hearing individual, and someone on the autism spectrum, Ann's personal journey deeply influences her art. She prioritizes the process of creation and strives to break down boundaries while celebrating diversity through her artwork. Ann seamlessly merges static arts with live performances and digital interaction, pushing the limits of her bamboo-based lantern building skills. Alongside her career in people-centered Health IT, she has honed her expertise in photography, digital production, and soft sculpture. Currently engaged in the ScreenDance residency, Ann focuses on creating accessible art for all disabilities. Her ultimate goal is to inspire others to reconsider system barriers, embrace diversity, and ensure inclusivity in the arts, fostering a welcoming and inclusive artistic community.
