About

Participants in this workshop will be going on an engaging art journey to learn about culture and Indigenous people. They will be learning about residential schools and their impacts on generations of people. The first part of the workshop involves an interactive conversation about culture. The culture conversation was designed to outline common elements of culture so that learners will have a format to organize cultural learning. This breakdown allows participants to parallel their own understanding of culture with other people so that we can recognize and celebrate our differences and similarities. Having a format for organizing cultural learning is also a way to engage in future cultural experiences. This conversation is very versatile and can be used in many ways to influence engagement. Holly will guide and engage participants in meaningful discussion with opportunities to share realizations and wonderings. This conversation will ignite cultural appreciation!

The second part of the session will have people share knowledge and understandings of residential schools in Canada. We will have the opportunity to acknowledge and ask questions about the history, the impacts of residential school and learning about the truths of those schools. We will then learn about documents that have been released to help repair the relationship between Indigenous people and the rest of Canada because of residential school history. In the last part of the workshop participants will be learning a few art techniques to create their own art piece that is influenced by reconciliation. Learning how to tell story or express feelings through art is a powerful experience.

The end goals are for people to recognize what true reconciliation means, what kind of efforts that are happening to work towards reconciliation and how to become an advocate for reconciliation. There are ways to use this experience and the existing documents to influence your own perspective of reconciliation, reconciliation efforts in your workspaces as well as reconciliation conversations with your friends and family. Ideally this would help participants recognize that we can make positive and powerful efforts towards reconciliation.
