About

Mappined Life is a sculpture installation that artist, Andy Berg invites Brockville Culture Day visitors to investigate as she assembles this in front of her studio space at 23 Perth St.

COVID-19 considerations: There is room between the front of the building and the sidewalk for physical distancing while viewing Berg's sculptural installation process. The installation will begin at 12:00 noon and be dismantled at 3:00 p.m.

Mappined Life is a cement, clay and mixed media sculpture installation which investigates human experiences within a constructed environment. The work consists of a number of movable pieces including hand cast cement building-like structures, hand formed clay sheep, a couple of cast "green spaces" and a few found objects. This work has been shown in different iterations at the Canadian Sculpture Centre in Toronto and at Unit 115 in Kingston.

Each time Mappined Life is installed, it utilizes a different script or story and therefore each time, the sculpture undergoes change(s). For Brockville Culture Days, the story script will use the 2020 Culture Days theme of "Unexpected Intersections" to create an art installation about the sculpturally expressed intersection of some of our unexpected human experiences in the COVID-19 pandemic. How does this feel? How does it look? How does it act? How does it react? Drop by and see what transpires with Mappined Life and see if your own story is visible in the sculpture installation.

Additional item: Andy will have a second surprise mixed media and found object sculpture installed in front of the 23 Perth St. studio building for visitors to explore. Check it out. Question: What kind of sheep will it be?

Organizer

Andy Berg, Sculptor and Installation Artist

Andy Berg is a sculptor, installation artist, and community engagement artist. I have recently moved my studio to Brockville from Kingston, Ontario.

Engaging a holistic, Earth centred and feminist ethic, my sculpture practice focuses on a number of domains:

-A critical, tactile expression of humanity’s shared connection to and responsibility for our home, The Earth, and the interconnected web of life via sculptures and installations, often with cement castings, clay and objects found by chance.

-An examination of mid 20th century women’s abstract expressionist painting conceptual frameworks by employing the craft methods of clay forming and pottery glazing into ceramic sculptures as an analytical process of recapitulation,

-As a partner in Riel + Berg Culture and Art, an Indigenous and Non-Indigenous team from Kingston that engages with community through public art, education, and artistic and cultural interpretation of TRC Calls to Action,

-A critical and visual art exploration of so-called pseudo-scientific health methods is an emerging subject matter,

-Integrating concepts of vitalism into spatially oriented artistic considerations that facilitate viewer’s haptic engagement.

-Invitations to visitors to engage with my sculptural installations in order to facilitate the telling of a different narrative.
