About
This is no ordinary year, and with that comes change. This duo show brings together times and conversations between two lifelong friends. Having both survived their 20s making art in different areas; the two artists have come together to present a show of drawings.
In David Bowie’s song Changes he writes: "So I turn myself to face me / But I've never caught a glimpse / Of how the others must see the faker / I'm much too fast to take that test." These lyrics can be read alongside Jen Funk’s drawing series, where she depicts her body in different states of gender changes. In the characters, Funk’s drawings are a look into our fascination with self making. The open series of drawings continues serially, much like the images of selves that proliferate in today's social media.
Alexis L Grisé’s work addresses the nature of material and surfaces in relation to entropy and change. The wood grain frottage is a study of wood materials; telephone poles and dock bumpers weathered over time. This year L Grise has changed location to Winnipeg. Looking for pieces that remind him of the Dumbo area, where he held a studio for several years, L Grisé made frottages on canvas of wood grains in the neighborhoods of the Exchange District and Chinatown.

La Maison des artistes visuels francophones
La Maison des artistes visuels francophones is a center of contemporary artists working with the francophone community of Manitoba, the wider francophone community and all the bodies that interact with them. It supports the dissemination of works in all disciplines through exhibitions, exchanges, workshops and artist residencies. It offers particular support to emerging artists in the presentation of their first exhibitions and a suitable framework for proposals for more established artists and for curators. It is based on a critical dialogue in the orientation of its programming and its projects. Through networking and partnerships, La Maison des Artistes encourages openness to forms of expression from elsewhere to energize the community. For the professionalization of its members, it organizes training sessions, talks and forums.
