About

In this three-part video segment, Self-taught Contemporary Visual Artist Joan A Brown shares with her audience a glimpse into her start as a self taught, artist, as well as offers an easy to follow step-by-step demonstration, which highlights how she paints clouds in her own unique signature style that is quick and EASY, yet very realistic using a limited palette anyone can master.

One of the basic fundamentals of creating a beautiful landscape painting are set in the sky and clouds. "Clouds" as a subject in any style of painting can be somewhat challenging to paint in a manner that make them appear realistic—if that's the look and feel the artist is aiming for. However, in this digital presentation, Joan makes it look easy, using a technique she developed herself called, "cleaning the brush", and have used for decades in her oils, acrylics paintings.

Often times people shy away from following their creative passions due to fear of what others may think, lack of confidence in their creative abilities, or because of fear that what the want to create may not fit into the mainstream. Joan has never allowed any of these imagined or real nay-sayers stop her from expressing herself and the world around her through her paintings, many of them landscapes featuring memories and landmarks of Alberta the province where she still calls home.

In this candid interview and demonstration, Joan reveals the valuable lesson she learned as a successful "self-taughter" and artist educator. For those interested in becoming a "self-taught" Artist, as well as following their own (not someone else's idea) creative bliss, or as Joan describes it: "puts me into the zone of who I am"...In my opinion, everyone is born an artist. One only need let go and allow their creative energies to flow.

Meet Contemporary Canadian Artist Joan A Brown

“Hi, my name is Joan A Brown and I am a Self-Representing Visual Artist and Creativepreneur. I’m also a certified Life Skills Coach and Personal Assistant. I enjoy using my skills for the purpose of enhancing the lives of others.

I have a passion for new experiences and passing that knowledge along to others. As such, I have acquired several accolades during my life, including certificates in Early Childhood Development, Makeup Artistry, and Graphic Design. I recently graduated from George Brown College with a Certificate in Life Skills Coaching. My goal is to use this newly acquired skill and experience to help individuals empower themselves and reach their goals.

Acting is a “secret’ passion of mine. I auditioned for and was select as one of the participants in Dove’s “Beautiful Age” Campaign in 2014.

Following My Bliss

I’ve represented myself as an amateur contemporary artist while teaching beginner oil painting classes at various venues, including at-home studio, Michaels Arts & Crafts and through various workshops.

“I try not to limit myself when it comes to expressing myself as a visual artist. I follow my bliss and enjoy anything that allows me the freedom to express myself through various mediums such as drawing, painting landscapes, flower paintings, watercolor, producing and editing videos, websites, and other similar interests.”

I am obsessed with Photoshop, video production and video editing. I spend much of my free time making art (painting, drawing) and applying those to video for use on my websites, social media, and commission work.

I enjoy esoteric subjects, reading self-help and ‘new-age” books, Tarot, walking after dark, proud of my Jamaican Heritage, listening to my favourite tunes, lover of animals, and passionate about cooking.
