About

Of the art forms that I practice cosplay is the most encompassing. It inspires an incredible range of ingenuity and dedication, and for me has developed skills and resources that are immeasurably helpful.

Cosplay can incorporate sewing crafts, jewellery making, sculpting, painting, design, fabrication, theater, photography and even just gluing things together for a start. It begins with the question of how do I transform this material (cardboard, fabric, foam etc) into this design (wings, capes, masks, props, full costumes, even giant articulated dinosaurs!). Learning and engaging skills of researching, planning, and exploring techniques set you on the path to creating unbelievable things.

Come meet Ruth Steinback, a self-taught master-level cosplayer (having competed in Anime North masquerades in Toronto), and see a wide sampling of materials, designs in progress as well as finished crafts and costumes.

Please drop in anytime during the event to learn more. Appropriate for anyone from "cosplay is a thing?" to brainstorming solutions for your own cosplay projects!

Organizer

Ruth Steinback

Ruth Steinback has a degree in Anthropology, a lot of experience functioning with anxiety, and is a self-employed local artist and petsitter. Working with a wide range of materials she creates jewellery, draws, paints, carves and sculpts, sews and has designed and created stuffed animals among other projects. She creates art to keep herself sane (despite so many of her projects driving her slightly crazy). Connecting with people and making some really neat stuff is an awesome bonus. Having first attended Anime North and discovering cosplay in 2003 Ruth has been making elaborate and detailed costumes to wear and show as a hobby ever since.
