About

For many people who live in traditional communities identity can be very straightforward. They identify themselves within a particular family, clan, band, or nation.

Historically Indigenous people have been stripped of their identity and forced to assimilate to the rest of society. The deprived identifications often have deeper dimensions and reflect a strong and spiritual connection to the land and other cultural traditions.

Matthew Stevens from the Mississauguas of Scugog Island First Nation will discuss Indigenous identity and the struggle the general public has with differentiating 'Canadian' identity and Native American identity.

About Mississauguas of Scugog Island First Nation: The Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation moved into southern Ontario from their former homeland north of Lake Huron around the year 1700. The Mississaugas are a branch of the greater Ojibwa Nation, one of the largest native groups in Canada.

The video will be released on Tuesday, October 13th on the Scugog Arts Facebook page. Link below!
