About

On loan from The Muse - Lake of the Woods Museum, the exhibit “Bakaan nake’ii ngii-izhi-gakinoo’amaagoomin: We Were Taught Differently: The Indian Residential School Experience”, will be a significant part of our National Day for Truth and Reconciliation activities. This exhibit, which combines powerful images, text, video, archival material, and personal testimonials to tell the story of the residential school experience in Canada, will be on display in our Gallery from September 4 to October 28, 2023. Visitors will learn why residential schools were established, what life in the schools was like, the legacy of the schools, the recent settlement agreement, and Government and church apologies.

The exhibition is sponsored by Affinity Credit Union, Shaunavon Advice Centre.

The Grand Coteau Centre Gallery will be open in the morning on Saturday, September 30 and the public will be invited to view this exhibition to contemplate and gain a greater understanding of the truth about residential schools in Canada.

A local Indigenous community member is partnering with the Shaunavon Library (which is in the same building as the Gallery) to offer Orange Shirt Day activities for children such as reading books, making a craft, and colouring.

Plans for the afternoon of September 30 include a special screening of the 2022 movie "Bones of Crows". See the event listing for details about this event.

Organizer

Grand Coteau Heritage & Cultural Centre

The Grand Coteau Heritage & Cultural Centre (GCHCC) houses a museum, art gallery and the Shaunavon Branch of the Chinook Regional Library.

Our museum collection is multi-disciplinary, including artifacts relating to the human history of Shaunavon, fine arts, and natural history specimens of the area.

Our art gallery hosts a minimum of six visual & media arts exhibitions per year featuring local artists and exhibitions available through the Organization of Saskatchewan Arts Councils Arts on the Move touring program.

A variety of programs and tours are offered in association with our art gallery and museum collection, making us more than a collection of objects. Educational programs are offered on a regular basis throughout the year to school students and can also be provided to other groups upon request. Our public programming provides opportunities for our community to learn & enjoy the arts, as well as the natural history and the human history of our area. The GCHCC is also a popular locale for many community gatherings and events.
