Artist Feature: Katie Mazie, On Board

On Board is a structure created from a collection of found ironing boards that Katie began gathering in the Niagara region during the final year of her undergraduate studies. Ironing is somewhat a thing of the past for many. The meaning of this work has a strong focus on the ‘bi-products’ of obsolete human behaviours. This assemblage gives new life to these discarded objects. When displayed in a mass they transform into anthropomorphic beings appearing to be climbing one another to increase their size and visibility. The ironing board tower has an undeniable haunting quality when displayed on this scale. They strive to give new life to these objects that once existed in almost every household, while reminding viewers that the things we discard still manage to take up space in our world.

Katie Mazi is a visual artist based in the Niagara region. She is a member of two local art collectives: Permanent Vacation and Pepsi Girls and is on the Board of Directors at the Niagara Artists Centre. Mazi works in various media, but her personal art practice has a strong focus on installation work. Mazi is currently most interested in collecting and presenting discarded domestic objects. Her installations immerse viewers into subversive environments to address consumerist behaviours in the age of capitalism.

Rhizomes 2020 is finally here! As part of the reimagined In the Soil Multi (p)Arts Festival, we look forward to delivering a series of site-specific installations and performances from a variety of incredible artists. This year, we offer tours to a variety of locations in the St. Paul Street East neighbourhood in downtown St. Catharines, running each evening from Thursday September 24 to Sunday September 27.

All performances and installations have been packaged together as an entire tour that will begin on the hour each evening (6pm, 7pm, 8pm) and for a maximum of 6 participants for each tour.

Covid-19: Health and safety protocols will be in place for all events including; hand sanitizer stations, sanitizer wipes, and contact tracing. Masks must be worn indoors at all times. In order to maintain physical distancing, only six participants will be scheduled for each tour.

In the Soil Arts Festival

Suitcase in Point, our partnering organizations, and a fantastic assortment of regional and national artists are gearing up to deliver part one of the reimagined In the Soil Multi (p)Arts Festival, ITS Online!

Our original, three-day celebration was set to take place in downtown St. Catharines June 5-7 with a program to include an incredible roster of artists delivering innovative work in live theatre, music, comedy, film, interactive workshops, site-specific installations and an opening night multi-arts spectacle! While we are saddened to have to cancel our annual gathering, we have reimagined an exciting new program and look forward to delivering In the Soil: A Multi (p)Arts Festival, starting with Part One: ITS Online.

Join us from the comfort of your screens on Friday 22 May at 6pm as we launch a digital series of one-time arts experiences. Events will run from Friday 22 May through Sunday 7 June, and will feature a little something for everyone, including: music, comedy, dance, aerial, theatre and comedy performances, dance parties, panel discussions, family friendly art making workshops, a collage party and more!

The full ITS Online schedule will be released very soon! In the meantime, mark your calendars for our exciting launch event with special guests, live performances and a good hour of good times, set for Friday 22 May at 6pm.

To make the ITS Online launch extra special, we encourage you to order some food and drink from your favourite local establishments as we join together (while apart) to celebrate our communities, our artists and our shared goal to get through this COVID-19 insanity.

ITS Online will be a free series with opportunities to donate. All donations will go toward supporting artist fees throughout our reimagined Multi (p)Arts Festival. Details of the next parts of the festival will unfold over the coming months and will include a “we’re back” street party, live theatre, comedy and music events, and our flagship multi-arts event, Rhizomes.
