About

Artist Su Xiang would like to share her experience with local communities during Culture Days. She will teach the participants how to weave on canvas such as applying pins to outline shapes and then use threads to “weave” and form three-dimensional artworks. The audiences brought their creativity from their own cultural backgrounds to make various shapes of weaving. Later, these canvases will be laid together to form a large installation piece named “Into A River” like little streams flowing into a river.

“Weaving” is my method of contemporary art practice. It was once an important craft in my family history, and it could be traced back for generations. I learned many Weaving stories from my grandma and my mum. However, “Weaving” craft was abandoned because of a new industry brewing in China. Women were eager to go to new and efficient factories instead of doing crafts at home. I decided to apply this lost “weaving” skill into my contemporary art practice. Through my art creation, I wished to re-establish the relationship with my family, friends and hometown, and at the same time I hoped to create the communication with the Canadian communities and reach out to the rest of the world.

For audiences age 12 and above
