About

Culture Shock is a celebration of hip hop and street culture in its 5th season! This event is planned and organized by the youth from our Youth Voices crew at Antyx Community Arts with the goal to bring more all ages dance events to youth in Northeast Calgary. Culture Shock will have two days of events this year.

September 27: Workshop Day (4-8pm)- will be an instructional session facilitated by guest artists to teach youth new and old to the scene, new skills that they can use in cypher or competition the following day. Please see our Friday listing for more details.

September 28: Competition Day (3-9pm)- will have breaking and all-styles battles, guest performances from youth, professional dance and beat artists, and our judges. Youth who would like to compete can register, free of charge, by emailing our youth voices email below or messaging our facebook 2019 event linked below. This event will also have an open cypher time open to youth from all skill levels to participate in. The event will end with an awards ceremony for the youth that win the competitions, as well as our new Ella Award and our Dope Skillz award for participation. This event is for TEENS and Young Adults. Everyone is welcome to watch.

Organizer

Antyx Community Arts, Youth Voices Team

Antyx Community Arts uses the arts as a tool to create opportunities for youth to become more engaged in their communities while experiencing increased connection and empowerment. Our strategy involves developing collaborative arts projects that transform youth, empowering them to share their voice and make a difference about issues they are passionate about. Projects are planned with various partners and full input and involvement from youth. Some of our groups, such as our Youth Voices, work on leadership projects they are passionate about, with Antyx as support. We aim to provide a safe, supportive place where marginalized youth can experience new opportunities, overcome barriers, build positive relationships and develop confidence and skills for life. Past projects have included: murals, installations, social interventions, discussion forums, video, animation and music projects, place-making initiatives and more. One of the yearly programs Antyx runs is a weekly hip hop group where youth learn from other youth and study various styles/forms of urban dance. This group hosted a breaking intensive in the summer, are champions of Battle City as the North Beasts, and you will see many of their faces competing at Culture Shock.

Antyx Community Arts Mission: engaging, empowering, transforming.
