About

Experience the immersive world of sound with Songs to the Sun, an innovative sound installation by Scott Rogers, at the Great Hall in the Civic Centre.

Songs to the Sun takes the global soundscape of the dawn chorus—the moment when many daytime birds awaken and begin to sing—as its starting point, creating an immersive audio composition where bird songs from across the globe come together in a polyphony that unfolds over a 12-hour period. Using open-source field recordings composed through chance-based operations, the work reflects on the passage of light, sound, and time through non-human scales and rhythms, transcending vast distances and ecologies.

Originally commissioned by and presented at the City of Toronto’s Nuit Blanche in 2023, Songs to the Sun is an eight-channel sound installation by artist Scott Rogers, now part of the City of Markham’s Circulating Public Art Collection. The installation will be presented at the Great Hall in the Civic Centre from October 7 through November 11, 2024.

Organizer

City of Markham Public Art

Markham's Public Art Program was first initiated in 2003 and formalized in 2012. Since 2013, five permanent artworks have been commissioned through the program, with two more currently in progress. In addition, the program has facilitated a series of community art initiatives in collaboration with the City's Public Realm section. In the fall of 2019, Markham City Council approved its Public Art Master Plan 2020-2024, and a related Implementation Plan in winter 2020. The objectives of the program are to inspire people to live, work, visit and invest in Markham; to celebrate the city's diverse cultures and heritage from multiple points of view; and to connect residents to Markham's built and natural environment.
