About

Artist-in-residence S7atsáliya (Charlene George) will bring her artistic practice to the Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Centre's lobby Fridays in September, weaving pieces inspired by the seasons. She has invited her husband Xá7chalh (Alvin Martin Jr.) and her sister-in-law Sh7eysh7éylhalut (Breeann Baker) as guest weavers to join her for some sessions.

Drop by to chat and learn more about their work, then follow their weekly progress by viewing their developing works in our WINDOW Gallery over the month of September.

S7atsáliya (Charlene George, MA) comes from the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh and Səlilwətaɬ nations and is a learner, teacher and advocate of the Sḵwx̱wu7mesh sníchim (Squamish language). S7atsáliya is grateful to her many teachers in their respective backgrounds, acknowledging a shared feeling, “to learn is to teach and to teach is to learn.”

Organizer

The Roundhouse/Vancouver Park Board

Established in 1997, The Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Centre is unlike any other community centre in Canada. Dedicated to community development through community-engaged arts and culture, it is an arts-oriented community centre that serves not only the residents of Vancouver’s Yaletown but all citizens of Vancouver and the lower mainland. Community cultural development – literally building creative community through creating art in everyday life – is at the heart of the Roundhouse mandate.

In addition to hosting a robust program of arts, sport, and recreation classes, the Roundhouse is the Vancouver Park Board flagship for an artist in residence program that commissions artists working with community-engaged and social practices to create new work by, with, for and about community. These residencies see professional artists and educators engage for a year or more on creative initiatives focused on building creative community, and promoting diversity, innovation, collaboration, and community engagement.

As the only designated arts and recreation centre in Vancouver, we work with many cultural community partners to present performances, exhibitions, festivals, and public programs ranging from courses and workshops to film series, conferences, and symposia.

From a wide range of programs for all ages and abilities, to a rewarding Volunteer Program and unmatched facilities and exhibition space, we invite you to experience our Mission to celebrate diversity of people, values, ideas and activities.
