About

Camera Obscura | Projected City

By Julie Dring

Imagine stepping inside of a camera. With the help of a simple light trick, you will be surrounded by your city in a whole new ‘light’. Camera Obscura | Projected City is an art installation that presents our city in a truly unique way. One that takes you to a time before digital and film photography, and before the invention of the camera, all while teaching you about the original ‘dark room’. Step inside to see your outside city.

Artist Bio:

Julie Dring is an arts manager and artist working out of the Kitchener-Waterloo area. Her work utilizes old-timey photographic processes to unite communities together. Julie’s interest in 19th century photographic processes stems from her 10+ year career in archives and museums. In 2014, Julie received her Master of Arts in Photographic Preservation and Collections Management from Toronto Metropolitan University. Julie has served as the Executive Director of Hamilton Artists Inc. (2018-2021) and has sat on the Board of Directors for Button Factory Arts (2020-2021), Forest City Gallery (2021-present) and Region of Waterloo Arts Awards (2022-present). Julie is the recipient of the Tenenbaum Fellowship at Toronto Metropolitan University’s Image Centre (2014), was nominated for a City of Hamilton Arts Award (2018), received a Waterloo-Region Micro-Grant (2020) and has exhibited as part of numerous collaborative arts projects throughout Southern Ontario (2012-2022).
