Mapping the Two Row

Capacity 3 Gallery Guelph, Ontario

Arts visuels, Autochtone — Autre

This summer, Urban Geographer Daniel Rotsztain joined the Two Row on the Grand as it embarked on its third paddle down the Grand River between Cambridge and Lake Erie. Organized by Six Nations and open to Indigenous and Non-Indigenous participants, the annual 9 day paddle is a relationship-building exercise to uphold the Two Row Wampum Belt — the original treaty between First Nations and Europeans that established how sovereign nations can live in peace, friendship, and respect on Turtle Island. As they paddled down the river Daniel used an accordion notebook to illustrate a map of our journey, tracing the route while highlighting the wide range of programs that provoked deep conversations about the state of “reconciliation” in Canada.

Daniel Rotsztain

Daniel is the Urban Geographer, an artist, writer and cartographer whose work explores our relationships to the places we inhabit. Employing geography to understand non-Indigenous Canadians’ responsibilities toward treaties and wampum, Daniel’s past work includes Cartography 17, a giant, collaboratively made map of Toronto that’s been exhibited at the Toronto Reference Library and the Power Plant gallery. Daniel’s work has also been featured in the Globe and Mail, Now Magazine, and a weekly segment on CBC Radio’s Here and Now.
