About

In Haircuts by Children by Mammalian Diving Reflex, kids are given the tools to become working hairdressers and the public is invited to have their hair cut, by 9 and 10-year olds. A simple premise, with deep implications. The event - which the

Calgary Herald called “Part performance art, part public service, part therapy” - tests our trust in the next generation and measures how far we’re willing to go to empower

youth. If we trust them to shape our future, will we let them shape our hairstyles?

Haircuts By Children is part of province-wide exhibition DO BLUE BUTTERFLIES EAT PARTS OF THE SKY?, and the Burlington Performing Arts Centre's Cultural Diversity Festival.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Mammalian Diving Reflex was founded in Toronto in 1993, and since 2013 has focused on ‘social acupuncture’ - playful, provocative, site and social-specific participatory performances that bring people together in new and unusual ways. The Artistic & Research Director of Mammalian is Darren O’Donnell. His recent book Haircuts by Children and Other Evidence for a New Social Contract (Coach House Books, 2017) presents the company’s model for collaborating with young people, using their work as a case study to explore the idea of increased social and civic participation of young people.
