About

Join MacEwan Biological Sciences professor Dr. David Locky and artist Dwayne Martineau to explore this river valley park and former landfill.

In response to With All Things Considered, our fall exhibition of works by Leanne Olson, learn about Dr. Locky’s research on microplastics and how our waste is impacting waterways and impacting ecosystems, and how photography is part of his practice of documenting this changing landscape in Dawson Park. Explore with Martineau how walks in the river valley inform his artistic practice as he leads an observational exercise to shift focus on the complex lives and life cycles found in this space. Does seeing this way shift what you regard, appreciate, understand, discard, discount, ignore or step upon?

Dr. David Locky is a wetland ecologist and Associate Professor, Biological Sciences at MacEwan University. Dr. Locky’s research interests and expertise include wetland classification and evaluation, plant diversity, ecology and biogeography, animal ecology, biogeochemistry, natural and human impacts and wetland policy and practice. Dr. Locky is a practicing Professional Wetland Scientist and Professional Biologist. He is an Adjunct Profession at the University of Alberta and Athabasca University.

Dwayne Martineau is a visual artist, musician and composer living in Edmonton. Two preoccupations dominate his work—the physicality of light, and experimental landscape photography. Using optics, found glass, mirrors and multiple exposures, Martineau introduces distortions, symmetries, and animism into exhaustive studies of forests and trees. His goal, as he describes it, is to use the unique power of photography to "give us a chance to see nature through a different lens, literally, and understand that it’s got its own thing going on..." Dwayne is a member of the Frog Lake First Nation, descended from a complex frontier mix of early French, Scottish and Irish settlers, Plains Cree, Métis, and Iroquois.
