About

Ever wondered how the imagination is unleashed on canvas? Witness multidisciplinary Anishinaabe artist Joshua Mangeshig Pawis-Steckley as he paints new works in development during this live demonstration. Originally from Ontario's Wasauksing First Nation, Joshua's work is dedicated to telling the current and historical stories of the Ojibway. Pawis-Steckley paints in the distinct style of Woodland Artists to depict traditional teachings that are rich with cultural and spiritual meaning. He employs the heavy silhouettes and colourful imagery characteristic of Woodland Art to illustrate stories in zines and comics. These works explore the historical relationship between indigenous and non-indigenous peoples in Canada and aim to raise awareness of the current state of affairs today.
