The first annual Borshch cook-off hosted by the Doukhobor Discovery Centre (DDC) took place in 2019. Now, the DDC is planning to host its second Borshch Cook-off that is set to take place September 25, 2021. Each participant will be invited to bring a gallon of home-made borshch to share with guests as well as judges. At the end of the day, after everyone is full of borshch, our three judges will award one participant with the "Borshch Cook-off" trophy, featuring a large green plastic cabbage. A separate award for the "People's Choice" will also be given to a participant. Foodways help to bring people together, they connect us to specific places, to our families, to our own heritage, and help to promote cross-cultural understanding. We invite everyone to come down to the DDC on September 25 try some great tasting Doukhobor borshch!
This event is free and will be accepting optional pay-what-you-may donations for admission.
Doukhobor Discovery Centre
The Doukhobor Discovery Centre (DDC) works to preserve and exhibit the historic cultural heritage and home industries of the Doukhobor peoples in a traditional communal village setting. The DDC seeks to share the Doukhobors' history, culture, and religion with as many people as possible. Through our guided tours visitors to our museum are able to experience Doukhobor communal living. Through our various programs, they are able able to learn about the Doukhobors' industriousness and rich cultural traditions. The Borshch cook-off continues to promote the Doukhobors' culture and is a celebration of the Doukhobor community in British Columbia.
