Artist Talk: finding roots on a garbage tour at 80˚ North

Ted Harrison Cabin (Artist Retreat), 85 km. from Whitehorse Crag Lake, 14 km. from Carcross, Yukon, Yukon Territory

Visual Arts — Talks and Discussion, Behind-the-scenes

Last June, Leslie Leong found garbage and discovered roots on a phenomenal 3-week journey 80˚ North, where explorers launched attempts at reaching the North Pole. The Arctic Circle Residency on a tall ship in the international waters of Svalbard with 30 artists is the source of a revised perspective. Currently at the Ted Harrsion Artist Retreat, Sept. thru Nov., Leslie is reframing depression, giving rise to hope in uncertain times for our planet. Join Leslie for talk on these outward and inward journeys. Then engage in an exploratory conversation: what is garbage, artifact, or nature’s refuse? The distinction is more complex than you think, as you can see identifying garbage from a collection of beach debris from 80˚ North.

Organizer

Leslie Leong & Ted Harrison Artist Retreat Society

Leslie Leong is a Northern Canadian artist, remaker, recycler and recovering Engineer. An inquisitive nature results in non-traditional techniques and use of unorthodox materials, like post-consumer recyclables and garbage. She recently reframed her issue-based art practice with a less dire perspective on our planet’s future. With self-diagnosed Artist ADD, she strives to limit her obsessive drive to mixed media, print making, jewellery smithing and ceramics, though she can’t help making photographs when a stunning scene presents itself, which occurs daily.
