Bay Roberts Cultural Foundation
The Bay Roberts Cultural Foundation, incorporated in 2009 as a not-for-profit, registered charitable organization, has been established to preserve and sustain the traditions and practices of outport life for present and future generations. Newfoundland and Labrador has changed a great deal since becoming part of the Canadian Confederation in 1949. The Bay Roberts Cultural Foundation honours the characteristics of our culture which have always made our province a holdin' ground, as Bay Roberts native son, Newfoundland writer Ted Russell, has described it. Through year round activities the Bay Roberts Cultural Foundation works with community groups both within the town and outside to develop and to financially support projects that preserve the characteristics of intangible cultural heritage that are distinct in our region and our province. It provides funding to Bay Roberts schools to work on projects to preserve traditional skills such a mat hooking and knitting and offers funding for scholarships to students receiving the highest marks in NL Studies, Theatre Arts, and Social Studies. It has cooperated with community groups to conduct interviews with senior citizens who describe life in the town and in the region when they were growing up. It has developed a series of town Wayside Signs depicting the history and intangible cultural heritage of the town, as well as gathering stories and folklore which have been preserved in the booklet "Folk Belief and Legends of Bay Roberts and Area" in cooperation with Dale Jarvis and Linda Wilson of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
