Donnie's Broom

Archway to River Mill Park Huntsville, Ontario

Visual Arts, Deaf & Disability Arts — Talks and Discussion, Excursion

Donnie's Broom is much more than a bronze sculpture by late artist Brenda Wainman Goulet. Donnie's Broom is a permanent memorial to inclusion, tolerance and community in Huntsville. Commissioned by the Downtown Huntsville BIA in 2015 this installation commemorates Donald "Donnie" Eagles who died at home on June 8, 2015. “When Donnie first started sweeping Main Street, kids... would pick on him. He used to get very agitated ... through help from (business owners) and his Community Living workers we were able to help him not feel threatened and help him live in the community as opposed to living in a group home." Donnie's Broom facilitates discussion about bullying, inclusion, and everyone feeling safe, needed and appreciated in community.
