With a focus on self-sustainability, Joanne turned to her backyard as the source for her all materials. Branches are used to form the skeleton for her lantern sculptures. Plants used for papermaking are grown for their fibers. Flowers and leaves are added to her sculptures as inclusions. With this process, the light diffuses through her lanterns in a much more natural way, highlighting all those wonderful imperfections found in the materials nature creates.
